Ha. Right. Maybe not for humans for the next "little" while. But ants seem to have it down pretty good.
According to some Texan and Brazilian researchers, a species of ants have absolutely zero need for males when it comes to procreation.
The article is to be published in PLoS ONE this week. Although the presence of males would indicate sexual reproduction at some point in time, but there appear to be no males at all in the population. Even dissections of reproducing queens have found empty sperm storage organs within.
It's interesting how such an event could evolve, given that sexual reproduction is around to create genetic variation and limit the ability of detrimental mutations from accumulating as quickly.
