Vancouver Olympics 2010

I've never been prouder to be Canadian!! The last 17 days have been an absolute whirwind.

I didn't watch a lot of the Olympics, because I wasn't home most of the time (and when I am, I'd rather sleep), but I did catch some Men's Snowboard Cross, Pairs Ice Dance, Curling and of course Hockey! I was sporting my blue Wrigley Olympic toque while sitting nerve-wrackingly at the edge of my couch during the Men's gold medal hockey game.

I'm so proud of our Canadian atheletes and how outstandingly well we performed this year!

We won medals virtually everyday! (exceptions: opening day Feb 12, and Feb 20). With an abundant 26 medals this Olympics showing - 14 gold, 7 silver, 5 bronze - we've outshown all the countries in previous Winter Olympic history by sweeping the gold podium! The previous record was set in 1976 by the Soviet Union, and tied again in 2002 by Russia (13 gold medals). Will we be beat next Winter Games? We'll have to wait until February 7-23, 2014 in Sochi Russia to see...

A Single Man and a Social Mixer

Kendra, Ildiko and I went to see A Single Man yesterday. I've been eyeing this movie since I saw that it would be playing at the Bookshelf. Since I watched Avatar on Thursday, I decided to put a day in the middle, and watch A Single Man on Saturday. I spent the morning at school, chugging my way through even more assays and going over the stats assignment with Kendra before deciding I am (FOR ONCE!) leaving school early. I got home by about 415 and relaxed for just over an hour before Ildiko came over to go to the theatre.

The movie is about a homosexual relationship, and not in any ray a romante or comedy movie - very much out of my normal genre of movie - putting it as the fifth movie on #95 of my DayZero project.

I very much enjoyed the movie. It is reminiscent of Requiem for a Dream, in that it is disjunctly put together, but not as exaggerated. There is a lot of shuffling back and forth within time, but most things are sequential, as we travel through what Dr. Falconer is planning to be his last day alive.

The movie literally doesn't skimp on details. With a constant visual of clocks in the background, there is a real feel for time progression as George makes his way to the end of his day and the end of his life.

It's a heartfelt story of prematurely lost love, and what I enjoy the most is how off the cuff it is, by portraying not the typical plotline of a lost spouse, but headlining what happens when a homosexual couple is torn apart by inevitable accidental circumstance. Set in the 1960s, it also highlights the segregation of homosexuals at the time, by George not being invited, or allowed, to attend the memorial service for his deceased partner. The acting by Colin Firth and Julianne Moore definitely deserve the praise they are receiving. Truly an amazingly done movie, and very worthy of the Oscar buzz it is generating.

After getting home from the movie, I got ready to head to social mixer 'k'. Kendra came over to drop off her and Chris' stats assignments before giving me a lift to Chase's place. There weren't as many people as last time, which frankly is a good thing. When I arrived, they had just begun singing the day long written 6 page story. I wasn't around for the making of it, but it was apparently a day long process to get that ridiculous story out there. It was monologued to guitars, with Phil freestyling some lyrically rhyming choruses in between.

There were a lot of New Liskeardians, and a vast amount of new faces to me. I finally got to meet Joel and Adam's girlfriends, and the girls are an absolute blast. I met some other people and chatted with them for a large portion of the night, before realizing it is past 2am (wayy past when I was originally planning to go home) and decided it was time to go home. The walk home was much shorter than I remember from last time, which actually didn't matter for last night since it has been relatively mild outside here lately. At a balmy zero-ish degrees, the walk home was refreshing and much needed - especially after the tequila Adam handed me, and the drink that Graehem mixed for me. A fun night indeed, as always at Chase's.

Avatar

Kendra, Kris and I went see Avatar (FINALLY!) in 3D last night. We first stopped to grab a bite to eat at a place down the road called Ample Annie's. You could tell we were totally in a bar, because it was full of the after work crowd getting their beer on.

It was 2 of 1 wings at the bar, plus free pool, but we partook in neither of them. We ordered our wraps (which were humongous - hurray for 2 meals in 1), ate quickly and dashed off to the theatre.

The theatre wasn't full at all, and we sat a bit closer to get in on the highly touted action. Bad idea. With a headache already coming in, it is not a good idea to watch a 3D movie up close. I absolutely loved the movie, but the pounding going on upstairs in my head wasn't the greatest.

I won't write much about the movie since I'm sure everyone on the planet has seen it a bazillion times by now. Suffice to say, I thought the movie was absolutely fantastic. Although I couldn't really tell the difference between the regular 3D and the steroscopic filmmaking - however, I haven't been told/shown the exact differences between them.

Be Mine!

This song is so addictive.. I love it. The video is weird, but Robyn is fantastical.

It's a good thing tears never show in the pouring rain
As if a good thing ever could make up for all the pain
There'll be no last chance I promise to never mess it up again
Just a sweet pain of watching your back as you walk
As I'm watching you walk away

And now you're gone it's like an echo in my head
And I remember every word you said

It's a cruel thing you'll never know all the ways I tried
It's a hard thing faking a smile when I feel like I'm falling apart inside
And now you're gone it's like an echo in my head
And I remember every word you said

And you never were, and you never will be mine
No, you never were, and you never will be mine

For the first time, there is no mercy in your eyes
And the cold wind is hitting my face and you're gone
And you're walking away
And I am helpless, sometimes, wishing's just no good
Cause you don't see me like I wish you would

Cause you never were, and you never will be mine
No, you never were, and you never will be mine

There's a moment to seize everytime that we meet
But you always keep passing me by

No, you never were, and you never will be mine

I saw you at the station
You had your arm around what's her name
She had on that scarf I gave you
And you got down to tie her laces

Cause you never were, and you never will be mine
(You looked happy and that's great)
No, you never were, and you never will be mine
(I just miss you, that's all)

Cause you never were, and you never will be mine
No, you never were, and you never will be mine

There's a moment to seize everytime that we meet
But you always keep passing me by

No, you never were, and you never will be mine

Cause you never were, and you never will be mine
No, you never were, and you never will be mine

There's a moment to seize everytime that we meet
But you always keep passing me by

No, you never were, and you never will be mine

Physiotherapy

At my physio assessment today, the therapist determined my ATFL (anterior talofibular ligament) to be injured. The ATFL is the lateral ligament, and the most commonly sprained portion of the ankle. It is located in front and medially of the talus bone.

To top it off, because of how inflamed my ATFL is, I apparently haven't noticed that when I fell, I also knocked my cuboid bone out of place. The cuboid bone is one of the tarsal bones in the foot. I'm not sure exactly how I injured my cuboid, but the therapist seemed to enjoy me standing on my right foot with my left foot up and behind me, so she could repeatedly jab my tarsal bones "into place".

For the win.

She taped up my ankle really good, so that my ligament wouldn't over stretch itself while I'm doing everyday things like walking and squating. Yes, indeed, she taped it up real good. Good thing I get to take this off before my next appointment. Another reason to look forward to Friday. =)

To make up for a crappy day with a worse-than-last-assignment mark in stats, and having a long day in the lab and being told I should lay off my exercise classes until my ankle heals, I treated myself to new shoes.

NO JUDGING! I know they are virtually the same colour as my old pair, but actually I don't really like black boots. These are suede, like my old pair, and they are super comfortable. Granted I'll have to wear thicker socks, and probably leg warmers inside as well (there's a significantly larger gap in them than my old pair), but these ones are different! They are over the knee, or I can fold them down to be below the knee, and they look fantastic. Cheap too!

Yes. I have a shoe fetish. But it's also because I have trouble passing up a good deal. On shoes.
